Curriculum Links
This tool supports the Number strand of the Irish Primary Mathematics Curriculum, especially work in counting, ordering numbers, comparing numbers, place value, estimation, addition, subtraction and mental calculation strategies. It is most suitable for Senior Infants – 3rd Class, with useful links into older classes for estimation, negative numbers, decimals and more advanced operations.
Children can use the Number Line to:
count forwards and backwards, locate numbers, compare numbers, estimate positions, make jumps of 1, 2, 5 or 10, model addition and subtraction, bridge through 10, and explain mental maths strategies visually.
Lesson Ideas
Find the Number
Call out or generate a target number and ask children to locate it on the number line. Encourage them to explain how they found it using nearby numbers, intervals and landmarks.
One More / One Less
Start on a number and ask children to find one more, one less, two more or two less. This helps children connect counting forwards and backwards with simple addition and subtraction.
Addition Jumps
Use forward jumps to model addition. For example, start at 6 and jump forward 4 to show 6 + 4 = 10. Ask children to describe each jump.
