Curriculum Links
This tool supports the Shape and Space strand of the Irish Primary Mathematics Curriculum, especially work in 2D shapes, circle properties, spatial reasoning, angles, symmetry, measures and mathematical investigation. It is most suitable for 3rd Class – 6th Class, with simpler circle-part activities useful for younger pupils.
Children can use the Circle Explorer to:
identify and describe parts of a circle, explore radius and diameter, compare circumference and diameter, investigate sectors and fractions of a circle, make angle connections, explore symmetry, and explain circle properties using visual models.
Lesson Ideas
Parts of a Circle
Ask children to identify the centre, radius, diameter and circumference. Encourage them to explain how each part is connected to the circle.
Radius and Diameter
Show a radius and a diameter and ask children to compare them. Guide children towards noticing that the diameter is twice the radius.
Real-Life Circles
Ask children to find examples of circles in real life, such as wheels, clocks, coins, lids or sports markings. Discuss which circle properties they can see.
