Interactive Abacus

Explore number in a clear, visual and hands-on way with an interactive abacus designed for the primary classroom. Children can move and group beads to practise counting, number bonds, place value and calculation strategies, helping them see how numbers are composed and related. It is ideal for demonstrations, mental maths practice and building strong early number sense.

This tool supports the Number strand of the Irish Primary Mathematics Curriculum, particularly Numeration and Counting and Place Value and Base Ten. It is most suitable for Junior Infants – 3rd Class, helping children progress from counting and recognising quantities to grouping in tens, representing numbers and understanding the value of digits within our base-ten system. Children can use Interactive Abacus to:

count and represent quantities, group beads in tens, compose and decompose numbers, explore number bonds, compare amounts, investigate tens and ones, model simple addition and subtraction, recognise place value, and develop efficient mental calculation strategies.

Lesson Ideas

Build the Number

Call out a number and ask children to move the beads to represent it. Encourage them to explain how many tens and ones they can see.

Make the Bond

Choose a target number such as 10 or 20. Show part of the number on the abacus and ask children to work out how many more beads are needed.

Add and Show

Represent a starting number, then move more beads across to model an addition calculation. Ask children to describe how the total changes.

Take Away

Build a number on the abacus and remove a given amount. Encourage children to predict the answer first, then use the beads to check their thinking.
