Interactive Dienes Blocks

Explore place value, addition and subtraction with interactive Dienes blocks designed to make regrouping easy to see and understand. Build numbers using hundreds, tens and ones, exchange blocks when crossing place-value boundaries, and model calculations step by step to help children develop a strong visual understanding of written and mental methods.

This tool supports the Number strand of the Irish Primary Mathematics Curriculum, particularly Place Value and Base Ten and Sets and Operations. It helps children see how numbers are composed, partitioned, combined and exchanged using the base-ten system, while developing efficient addition and subtraction strategies. Curriculum Online

It is most suitable for 1st Class – 4th Class (Stages 2–3), with simpler place-value activities also useful in Senior Infants. At Stage 2, the curriculum emphasises understanding the value of digits according to their position and representing addition and subtraction strategies; at Stage 3, children explore equivalent representations using base ten and develop greater flexibility with operations. Curriculum Online

Children can use Dienes Blocks to:

build and represent numbers, explore hundreds, tens and ones, partition numbers in different ways, exchange ten ones for one ten and ten tens for one hundred, model addition and subtraction, make regrouping visible, compare calculation strategies, and explain the place-value thinking behind written methods.

Lesson Ideas

Build the Number

Call out a number and ask children to build it using hundreds, tens and ones. Discuss how each block represents a different place value.

Exchange and Regroup

Create an addition or subtraction calculation that requires regrouping. Ask children to exchange ten ones for one ten, or one ten for ten ones, and explain what changed.

Show It Another Way

Build a number using Dienes blocks, then challenge children to represent the same value in a different way. Use this to explore partitioning, equivalence and flexible number sense.
