This tool supports the Number strand of the Irish Primary Mathematics Curriculum, particularly the strand units Numeration and Counting and Sets and Operations. It develops early work in counting, estimating quantities, comparing sets, combining quantities, addition and subtraction strategies. It is most suitable for Junior Infants – 2nd Class, covering Stage 1 and Stage 2 of the curriculum.

Children can use the Ten Frame to:

count collections of marbles, add groups while keeping a running total, estimate quantities after a brief visual display, compare two sets using more, less and equal, find the difference between quantities, check estimates by counting, and develop flexible mental addition and subtraction strategies. Marble Jar

The visual and playful nature of the activities also supports the curriculum’s emphasis on children reasoning, estimating, discussing strategies and solving mathematical problems rather than simply carrying out calculations.

Lesson Ideas

Running Total

Choose a marble colour and drop marbles into the jar in groups of 1–10. Keep the total hidden and ask children to keep a running total in their heads after each drop. Reveal the total at the end to check. Marble Jar

Flash and Estimate

Show a jar of marbles for three seconds, then cover it. Ask children, “How many do you think were there?” and “What helped you estimate?” Reveal the total afterwards and discuss whether the estimate was too high, too low or exact. Marble Jar

Which Jar Has More?

Display two jars and ask children to decide which contains more marbles, or whether they are equal. Then ask, “How many more?” to develop comparison language and early subtraction through finding the difference. Marble Jar

Count in Groups

Set the drop amount to 2, 5 or 10 and repeatedly add the same-sized group to the jar. Ask children to predict the new total before each drop, reinforcing skip counting and repeated addition. Marble Jar

Make the Target

Choose a target number such as 20, 30 or 50. Children decide which groups to drop into the jar to reach the target exactly. Encourage different solutions, such as 5 + 5 + 10 or 8 + 7 + 5, to build flexible number composition and mental calculation.
