Interactive Coordinate Explorer
Explore coordinates through an interactive grid designed to make position and plotting clear and engaging. Children can read and plot ordered pairs, locate points accurately and build confidence using the x- and y-axes.

This tool supports the Shape and Space strand of the Irish Primary Mathematics Curriculum, particularly Spatial Awareness and Location. It is most suitable for 3rd Class – 6th Class, progressing from simple grid references and location work towards plotting points accurately on the full coordinate plane. Curriculum Online
Children can use Coordinate Explorer to:
read and plot ordered pairs, identify positions on a grid, use the x- and y-axes correctly, describe location precisely, develop spatial awareness, explore movement between points, and build confidence working with coordinates and the coordinate plane.
Lesson Ideas
Plot the Point
Call out a coordinate and ask children to plot it accurately on the grid. Encourage them to explain why the x-coordinate is read before the y-coordinate.
Name the Coordinate
Place several points on the grid and ask children to identify their coordinates. Use this to reinforce axis order and accurate reading of ordered pairs.
Move and Describe
Start at one coordinate and give instructions such as move 3 right and 2 up. Ask children to find the new position and describe the movement mathematically.
Create a Shape
Give children a sequence of coordinates to plot and join. Ask them to predict the shape, complete it, and then create their own coordinate challenge for a partner.
