Interactive Cuisenaire Rods
Explore ratio, proportion, equivalence and algebraic reasoning using colourful Cuisenaire rods. Children can compare relationships between rods, model unknown values, investigate patterns and reason visually about how quantities are connected. ⭐️ Best used in full screen mode!

Curriculum Links
This tool supports the Number and Algebra strands of the Irish Primary Mathematics Curriculum, especially work in equivalence, patterns, relationships, ratio, proportion, unknown values and mathematical reasoning. It is most suitable for 4th Class – 6th Class, with some tasks suitable for confident 3rd Class pupils.
Children can use Senior Cuisenaire Rods to:
represent equivalent relationships, compare quantities, explore ratio and proportion, build and extend patterns, model unknown values, reason about equality, and explain algebraic thinking using visual models.
Lesson Ideas
Patterns and Rules
Create a growing pattern using rods. Ask children to describe the rule, continue the pattern and predict later stages.
Algebraic Thinking
Use a rod to represent an unknown value. Children can build expressions with rods and compare which combinations are equal.
Explain the Relationship
Ask children to describe their reasoning using mathematical language:
“This is double…”
“These two lengths are equivalent…”
“The missing rod must be…”
