Interactive Algebra Scales

Explore balance, equality and unknown values using interactive algebra scales. Children can build equations, compare both sides, reason about missing values and see algebra as a visual balancing process.                                       ⭐️ Best used in full screen mode!

Curriculum Links

This tool supports the Algebra strand of the Irish Primary Mathematics Curriculum, especially work in equality, relationships, unknown values, equations, patterns and mathematical reasoning. It is most suitable for 3rd Class – 6th Class, with simpler balance activities also useful for confident younger pupils.

Children can use Algebra Scales to:

compare expressions, explore equality, model equations, find missing values, reason about balance, represent unknowns, and explain why both sides of an equation must remain equal.

Lesson Ideas

Equal or Not Equal

Show two sides of the scale and ask children whether they are equal. Children can justify their answer using the balance as visual evidence.

Find the Unknown

Hide or represent one value as an unknown. Ask children to work out what the unknown must be to keep the scale balanced.

Same Change Both Sides

Add or remove the same value from both sides of the scale. Discuss why the balance stays the same when the same change is made to both sides.
