This tool supports the Shape and Space strand of the Irish Primary Mathematics Curriculum, especially work in 2D shape, spatial reasoning, transformation, symmetry, tessellation, problem-solving and mathematical reasoning. It is most suitable for 2nd Class – 6th Class, with simpler free-build tasks useful for younger pupils.

Children can use Pentominoes to:

build and combine shapes, rotate and flip pieces, explore symmetry and tessellation, solve spatial puzzles, investigate area, compare arrangements, and develop flexible problem-solving strategies.

Lesson Ideas

Free Build

Allow children to explore the pentomino pieces freely. Ask them to create pictures, patterns or larger shapes using the pieces.

Complete the Puzzle

Give children a target outline or grid challenge and ask them to fill it using selected pentominoes. Encourage trial, error and strategy.

Rotate and Flip

Ask children to choose one piece and find all the different ways it can be turned or flipped. Discuss which arrangements are the same and which are different.
